[ FUTURISTIC - far future ]
Post-apocalypse ; romance / sex
nudity
Cinematography_: ++
Director_: George Lucus
Starring_: Robert Duvall
GOOD + : as rated by DR-KNOW
Storyline_: The opening scene shows a large and thriving "community" bustling with activity.
Everyone (dressed in white) walks at a breakneck pace and seems reminiscent of an ant colony. Only the
robotic police stand out.
While the police have been given calm voices their menacing appearance remains in stark
contrast to the bustling populace. Though nothing to worry about since the hero of the story is a law
abiding, religious man. In fact he is quiet and reserved like the rest of the chemically sedated society.
The only trouble occurs when people reject the mandatory sedation. Or engage in sexual activity
which has also been outlawed. Sex, now only the act of deviants, is no longer required since procreation
occurs by test tube. Children are reared in groups by the robotic police.
Without sex, roommates are chosen by computer. Unfortunately for our hero the computer hardly
gives him a "match made in heaven" and the trouble starts as the manipulative woman takes steps to "wake
him up". Confused and bewildered, the action builds after the two engage in sexual intercourse for the
first time.
This film by George Lucas (his 1st) did not receive high praise at the time. And while much of
the nuance was likely lost on my 9 year old brain I liked it as much then as now. My brother (13 at the
time) took me to see this movie. Not exactly age appropriate viewing, but kids will buck authority in any
era.
Lucas's next film, "American Graffiti", became a breakout hit. A "must see" classic about the
50s coming of age. Undeterred by movie critics Lucas took pride in his initial work by sporting a "THX1138"
license plate on one of the "American Graffiti" muscle cars. He also added a reference in his legendary film,
"Star Wars".
[line from "Star Wars"] "Prisoner transfer from cell block 1138".
