GOOD ++ : as rated by DR-KNOW

"ALTERED STATES" is a love story hidden under science and philosophy. Nevertheless the fast pace and very brief courtship changes the equation as passion for discovery overpowers romantic passion.

While the ending nearly makes this movie a ROMANTIC DRAMA it has been primarily classified as SCI-FI / DRUG CINEMA. SCIENCE is "the drug of choice" for the movie characters, but the drug culture of the 1960s figured heavily into the early 70s storyline. Not surprisingly doctor Jessup (William Hurt) participates in a "magic mushroom" ceremony in a personal quest to find the ultimate truth.

(side note) Thanks to a personality Quirk of a woman I lived with for some years I fell asleep to this movie I'm on more than a hundred occasions. When it stopped and automatically rewound (VHS) I would have to restart it. Basically just nightly torture added to my daily trouble. Perhaps sleep deprivation was her way of altering my mind so that I would tell her I loved her ... oddly I just found out today that Drew Barrymore played one of the children on the show.
