THE BIG CHILL

(c) 1983 __ rated- R
[ ENSEMBLE CAST - DRAMA'EDY ]
drug cinema
starring: ensemble cast

GOOD ++ : as rated by DR-KNOW

The movie category is ensemble cast /drama, but this is borderline drug Cinema. The characters, who came of age during the 1960s, rode the wave of prosperity into the 80s. Therefore recreational drug use was central to that era.

The story opens with a body being dressed for an open casket funeral. The man's wrists were sewn closed like Frankenstein though neatly placed in his shirt cuffs. While the face of the deceased is never shown movie fans may know it was the future superstar, Kevin Costner.

The remainder of the cast were also rising stars except the more well known William Hurt who delivered an outstanding performance. Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum, and a young Meg Tilly round out the ensemble.

Given the size of the cast interpersonal relationships do not feature heavily. Rather it's the circumstances of their change from idealistic youth into pragmatic adults. Over the course of a weekend they all experience personal growth and find new glue to strengthen their relationship. As they each put away their regrets the characters find the decisions that moved them forward in life were not as bad as they thought.
