A debate between two factions of the Catholic church turns into a murder investigation when a translator is found dead in a vat of pigs blood. This is the second in three deaths that follow in rapid succession. The circumstances of the deaths invoke the signs of the apocalypse which gets the Holy Inquisition involved and that spells trouble for all. One of the unfortunates is a peasant girl who seduces a young novice (Slater) into a quickie and is caught later with a hunchback monk (Perlman).
