RUTHLESS PEOPLE

(c) 1986 __ rated- R
[ COMEDY ]
starring: Danny DeVito, Judge Reinhold, Helen Slater, Bill Pullman

GOOD ++ : as rated by DR-KNOW

The opening scene has Sam Stone (Danny DeVito) describing the backstory of his wife's Fortune to his attractive middle-aged girlfriend. Though Sam too had become rich while waiting for his wife to inherit her Fortune.

No second generation rich man, Sam's wealth was gained through a stolen business idea. Still, it was not enough. Sam wanted it all. He wanted his wife's inheritance and he was going to kill her to get it. When Sam gets home to do the deed he finds that his wife, Barbara (Bette Midler) is already gone. She had been kidnapped moments earlier by the couple Sam had swindled (Judge Reinhold, Helen Slater).

The headliner, Danny DeVito ("Taxi"), delivers a strong performance though most of the laughs are at his expense. His character sets the stage for the comedic performance of the supporting crew. Judge Rienhold and Bette Midler deliver some of the best PHYSICAL COMEDY on film.

Historical note when this movie was released on VHS the average cost of a comparable movie averaged from 50 to $100. As a consequence movies were rented. That allowed Blockbuster Video to become a global corporation.

Given the high purchase price it was common for people to "copy" the rented movies. "Ruthless People" became one of the first to incorporate ANTI-COPY encryption.
