THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST
(c) 1988 __ rated- PG
[ DRAMA'EDY ]
-- romantic drama
starring: William Hurt, Kathleen Turner, Geena Davis, Bill Pullman
GOOD + : as rated by DR-KNOW
Consider a movie where a slow place actually works. That means no car chase, no frenetic action, and
no snappy dialogue.
storyline: It's been two years since Macon Leary's ( William Hurt) preteen son was killed in a burger
joint. Still visibly despondent Macon's life takes another turn for the worse when he arrives home to
find his wife (Kathleen Turner) is leaving him.
During the "trial separation" Macon meets an oddly buoyant single mother (Geena Davis). Who actually
makes a good fit to his unusual family. The action builds after Macon takes up residence with Muriel
(Geena Davis) and her son.
The marriage of Macon's spinster sister leads the "trial separation" into a reconnection of Macon and
his wife. Ultimately this comedic drama (drama'edy) produces a heartwarming ending born of tragic loss.
Still the closer you watch and listen the more you will see the ending come into view.
All too often Hollywood substitutes action for story. Fortunately that's not the case here. On the other
hand, the subdued cadence leaves exceptional acting and cinematography to pull the film together. Which
accounts for three Oscar nominations and one win by Geena Davis.
Besides re-teaming Hurt & Turner ("Body Heat"), Bill Pullman, Ed Begley Jr, and David Ogden Stiers ("Mash")
round out the perfect cast in this "slow paced" Hollywood hit.
