GOOD ++ : as rated by DR-KNOW

set: San Francisco, CA.

For me a "must see" movie is also a "must have" movie for my collection. The reverse, not so much. Take the "Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus", for example. In this case Heath Ledger's last movie is a "must have", but watch sometime, maybe. "Basic Instinct", on the other hand, captures the 1980s and the timeless sexuality that makes it a "must see" 30 years later and beyond. The only negative part of this movie comes from the overused car chase that later became a part of every movie it seemed. Thankfully the two car chases in this movie were short and basically relevant.

Movie buffs can take delight in the strong supporting cast (Jeanne Tripplehorn, Stephen Tobolowsky) and the nod from later movies like the ending "police interrogation" scene from the "Whole Nine Yards" in 2000.

This film made Sharon Stone a superstar and yet she did not receive the full range of leads she deserved. In later years "Basic Instinct: II" was OK, but lacked the depth and strong sexuality that made the original a one-of-a-kind icon.
