"12:01" resembles "Groundhog Day" except with science and repeated murder. Unlike "Groundhog ..", however, the repeating day in "12:01" has a valid explanation.

(opening line from movie) reporter from the TV in background, "Very big news from the Utrell corporation. Scientists have discovered how to accelerate a sub-atomic particle faster than the speed of light" .... the rest of the moview is set up as the reporter interviews the primary investigator (Martin Landau) and then a second scientist who discredits the research by explaining the resulting "time bounce", should the experiment take place.

(another line later in the movie) ... Barry Thomas (Jonathan Silverman) picks up the ringing phone without a "hello" or any other preliminaries and says, "I'll call you back mom, the day is repeating".

As fate would have it, Barry meets the lovely brainiac (Helen Slater) project assistant on the day of the impending "time bounce". Fortunately the science is just good enough to be believable. Which leaves the "time bounce" to set the stage for love. The comedic elements are well played by whole cast including a bit part by Danny Trejo.
