ADULT WORLD
(c) 2013 __ rated- R
[ DRAMA'EDY ]
-- romantic comedy
starring: Amy Roberts, John Cusack
GOOD : as rated by DR-KNOW
This movie cleverly uses an adult movie and toy shop named, "Adult World",
as a metaphor in the struggles of a young woman entering the ADULT WORLD.
Though more than metaphorical word play the movie also employs a double
entendre since the young woman is also a virgin.
The movie begins in a suburban setting (filmed in Syracuse, NY) where Amy
(Emma Roberts), a focused college graduate, starts on the path to become a
famous poet. In the process, however, her single-minded effort lead her to bypass
sex and gainful employment. Meanwhile Amy's parents, the benefactors of her
artistic lifestyle, became strapped for cash and forced her to start earning a living
while she waits for her big break. Hence the job at Adult World.
This indie movie exhibits a fine mix of drama and comedy (drama'edy)
though some less open minded people may be turned away due to the "adult"
aspect. That content, however, hardly receives play. Instead this movie relies on
story telling and character development. Not gratuitous titillation that attempts to
carry less intellectual works. Again, to be succinct the "adult" aspect acts as a
metaphor ... POETRY, after all ... Duh.
I thought the best parts of the movie arrive with the interplay between Amy and her
new idol, middle-aged poet, Rat Billings (John Cusack).
DO NOT view this movie for artistic poetry readings for this too is all too brief again
acting more as a metaphor - thus putting the parts together this movie has very little to
do with poetry or sex shops, but rather the angst of becoming a true adult.
