"SCHITT'S CREEK"

[ sitcom ]
6 seasons _ 2015-2020
80 episodes _ 22min

TV-14 _ LGBT
starring: Eugene Levy, Dan Levy, Sarah Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Chris Elliot

GOOD + : as rated by DR-KNOW

Note, the LGBT, tag is for reference only. Prejudice people won't get any laughs here. For example, there are no cats getting run over for their amusement ... well, maybe just one. Also, there are no biker chicks starting barroom brawls over nothing ... well, almost. OK, at least there are no gratuitous dead bodies or people getting their eyes pecked out by a bunch of crows ... on second thought, maybe there are some laughs for the socially intolerant.

As a "storyline person", I'm still a bit undecided whether the "riches to rags" show cleverly bypasses the details at the lost of fortune by the Rose family. Or if more detail was needed. Going back to the LGBT reference, the show very cleverly eases the audience into the gay relationship of the show's lead, Dan Levy, as David Rose. Furthermore, the fact that this show was a family effort by Dan, Eugene, and Sarah Levy adds a great deal of endearment to the comedic storyline. For me, however, Catherine O'Hara as Moira Rose, provides a flawless performance that forgives any weakness in the Rose family backstory.

The other female cast members also do a good job. Historically, it's hard to gauge the longevity of a female actress no matter how good the performance. Still, it would be great to see more of Emily Hampshire who plays hotel clerk Stevie Budd. She shows great depth throughout the series even though her character was mostly relegated to deadpan humor. The other female lead, Annie Murphy, played the constantly bubbly Alexis Rose and was given the most difficult task. She had to convince the audience she would have lived the poor life in Schitt's Creek instead of jet setting as she had done since her teenage years. She pulled it off for the most part and we got to see her character grow. Good luck to her in her new series, "Kevin Can F.. Himself".

Since this is my first TV sitcom review I will add that the proof of any COMEDY is in the laughs ... GOOD+ ... is the second highest rating with GOOD++ as the highest. This series had plenty of laughs from start to finish. Given the low number of episodes per season there was insufficient time for complex character development. Even with that the show managed to balance laughs and character growth. Given the ever widening viewing options this show may be one of the last great TV series. The youth of today are developing ever shorter attention spans and may never again see a 15 episode per season series and certainly not a 20 episode per season TV series. For intellectuals, like myself, we are heading into a COMEDY DESERT. The future is sure to be paved with one and two season shows and ended with little more than 20 episodes. Watch this show and get your laughs now.

As far as current selections are concerned, I'd rather spend my day getting a root canal than watching three minute clips of stupid people doing stupid shit ... it's much better watching 22 minutes of Roland Schitt doing stupid shit.
